Blaufränkisch wines have aromas of dark ripe cherries and dark berries, are spicy with medium Tannin levels and good acidity. The grape grows across central Europe (Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany Croatia and Italy, however you’ll find it also in the USA in the Finger lakes region and Washington state. It’s a variety which works very well with your grilled steak, or a rack of lamb.
One of the most prominent wine makers for that varietal is Roland Velich from Austria. Whenever I get the chance to meet and taste with him, I’m always fascinated about his vision for this grape. I could listen to him for hours and observed other sommeliers having the same experience. I twisted his arm and asked if he’d be game to do a tasting online for my #winesimple wine lovers!
Here are the wines we’re going to taste:
- Hausmarke Weiss (white) 2019
- Blaufränkisch 2018
- Blaufränkisch Reserve 2016
